I restore women who have been destroyed by rape

Denis Mukwege

This surgeon has become the world’s leading specialist in vaginal reconstruction. Every year, he operates on thousands of women who have been brutally raped and mutilated by armed gangs in South Kivu. His work has earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.

When we arrived in his office, the tension was extreme. Denis had a copy of the New York Times before him, reading an article accusing certain armed gangs of the ongoing genocide. His panicked secretary blurted out, “They’re going to come here any minute now to kill you.” Denis then took a few minutes, his head in his hands, before telling us “carry on with what you came here to do, no one can escape his fate.” Then with an incredible serenity, he got up and led us to the operating room to begin filming.
