The Sakharov Prize is awarded annually to individuals or organizations that have dedicated their lives to the defence of human rights or freedoms. This year, Denis Mukwege has been put in the spotlight.

Over 15 years, this ‘miracle doctor’ has helped 200,000 victims of sexual abuse with his pioneering method of vaginal reconstructive surgery. He has worked tirelessly to repair what others continue to destroy with impunity. Dr. Mukwege’s work has already earned him many honours, including the French Legion of Honour and the United Nations Human Rights prize.

This is a triumphant victory for Denis, who puts his life on the line to defend the rights of women.
